The Natural Resources Defense Council is officially non-partisan environmental advocacy group that has been around since 1970. Conservation of the natural environment is its key agenda, and it applies pressure through lobbying Congress and campaigning for public policy in respect safeguarding the planet for future generations. It has had many programs that would relate to the Tsunami and Fkushima incident, from Nuclear to International program, most notably however it has recently been involved in looking at what would happen in the USA if a similar incident to the Tsunami triggered a serious beakdown at a Nuclear facility in the USA, including where and how. They have provided some useful maps and calculate that ‘6 million Americans living within 10 miles of a U.S. nuclear power plant’. Information on their website states that 'there are 104 nuclear reactors in the United States. If one of them lost both primary and backup power for even a matter of hours, it could lead to a meltdown and an airborne radioactive plume'. In 2011 it also reports there were five serious incidents at Nuclear power plants in the USA that also led to emergency shutdowns:
• Calvert Cliffs - Lusby, MD (due to hurricane)
• North Anna - Louisa, VA (due to earthquake)
• Ft Calhoun - Ft Calhoun, NE (due to flooding)
• Browns Ferry - Athens, AL (due to tornado)
• Surry - Surry, VA (due to tornado)
